One of my favorite ways to share art is to work directly with community members. I am lucky to have strong ties to Elkader, Iowa where I have made several public art pieces. Elkader has a rich and supportive art scene, which I am grateful to work alongside each year. In August 2022, I invited attendants of Art in the Park to join me in a collaborative public art piece. Through asking community members questions "post-COVID" about how they felt in their community, many suggested they missed doing things together, they missed feeling active in their community. I collected rocks along the Turkey River, brought them to the community art pavilion in Founders Park, and invited willing participants to paint rocks with me. Earlier in the year I connected with Earth Safe Finishes, which kindly provided non-toxic VOC free paint for our rocks. Each rock was then carefully placed back on the river bank.
